Map Table PIU 700x700mm Close Inspection

Expected for a simple restoration on the damaged and missing metal parts.

The most difficult is the broken hinge on one of the leg.

I have no knowledge to work on metals but my friend in Czech has experience on metal work, I can make drawings so he can produce in workshop, the screw holes and the old marks are the best and accurate reference.

The table top has a missing cork disc and the center plank had expended and popped up.

Seems an easy fix at first glance.

But something went very very wrong, it is not 700x700mm but 700 x 620mm.

Which is nonexciting on the period Gerätiste.

When removed the brass angle at the suspected cut side proofed that the terrible reality came true.

OH NO!!  someone had cut short the table top and two brass angles.

And trimmed 4mm top layer out of the 18mm Panel board table top for refitting the brass angle.

It was cut by hand saw and not even flat and straight.

Three brass angles had been removed two had shorten and secured by various types of screws and even nails.

So what to do now??

It is no longer a historical piece, but been abused for years after the war, a furniture in someone’s home(s) and most of the stretches and damage are after 1945.

After considering for a week for many scenario the only way is a total overhaul of the table top back to 700 x 700mm

The top 4mm planks to be replace to cover the new extension.

And keep all original brass angles with new replacement at the missing length.

Critics please not to bombard me to destroy a piece of history, my only choice is to restore it or to resell it.

I choose the first one and will treasure it.

What I suspected:

The new wooden cross beam is in two stacks 8+34mm to reach the original high of 42mm.

Later found this beam is 8mm shifted to the center, may be it was removed and damaged during the cut short operation.

The replacement beam is 25mm width not 26 as original, this beam was open holes at the center line, but the original was actually at the 16/10 to gave room for the nuts of the shaft, may be to move inward for the new 620mm width. (Why not 630x700mm)

Eventually the shaft bracket was unable to secure and forced to break the hinge of the leg.
